Pennsylvania School District Tells Parents Their Kids will be Sent to Foster Care if Lunch Debt is Not SettledA school district in Pennsylvania told parents of children with outstanding lunch debt could lose them to foster care if the unpaid bills aren't settled.

"You can be sent to dependency court for neglecting your child's right to food. The result may be your child being taken from your home and placed in foster care," the letters to parents stated. Van Shaun added that in her 33 years with the county's youth services program,"Never has this county removed a child from a home for unpaid bills and never will we."

The superintendent, principal, and tax paid lawyer should all be fired. Hire qualified people who know how to resolve problems without threats and mockery. The lawyer gave them the worst possible advice.

Wouldn’t it cost more to put them in foster care than to just feed them lunch ? Whose bright idea was this? Isn’t the National School Lunch Program a federally funded program?

Shameful. I taught. If the district is low income and filed paperwork there is a period of time to prove need for free lunch before taking effect. Many schools have absorbed equal lunch debt and not scared students with threats of removal from family.
