COMMENT | Post-GE14, we should have learnt the lesson how the press should not be controlled by the ruling elite.

| News about a company acquiring a stake in Malaysia’s largest integrated media company is against that spirit of “Political parties post-GE 14 should stay clear from media companies. At the same time, no one should be fronting for the purpose.

The press in Malaysia is currently enjoying an unprecedented freedom since the last election. There is freshness in the air. The press must be guaranteed to exercise its responsibility to society without fear and favour. At the same time, it must be held accountable for its conduct and deeds. Umno did the right thing in disposing of its interests. After all, they believe it does not make sense holding on to a minority stake in a company they can’t have any say in the management and editorial.
