To combat vaping, this Nebraska school district will randomly test students for nicotine.

Once a month, 20 to 25 kids at Fairbury will be randomly selected to be tested for nicotine through a urine test, Grizzle said. If they are found to have nicotine in their system, the student must sit out for 10 participation days of their extracurricular. If there is a second offense, they have to sit out for 45 days, and see a certified substance abuse counselor or licensed mental health provider for an evaluation or treatment at their own expense, he said.

"Our main concern is that number one, it's unhealthy. Number two, it's against the law: they are not supposed to be able to purchase cigarettes and vaping and all that," Grizzle said. Plus, he added:"I think it would stand to reason that it would get in the way of opportunities and educational experiences if they're focused more on when they can vape as opposed to what's going on in the classroom.

The rural school district of Fairbury, Nebraska, has about 900 students, 383 of whom are enrolled at the junior-senior high school. In the 2017 to 2018 school year, there were seven disciplinary incidents involving vaping at Fairbury Junior-Senior High School; in the 2018 to 2019 school year, that number jumped to 30, Grizzle said.

Will you stand up to the brown shirts or wait until they come for you?

Addicts will receive 3 months prison term plus $2,000 fine. Weekly blood test, failure would be a fine and 3 months prison at hard labor. We are going to nip addicts in the bud. If you are an addict, you better get help. If you sell, transport, or finance illegal drugs, death.

Public education is a menace to society at this point. Orwellian and horrifying. Please stop.

That's good because we don't want them to benefit from any performance enhancing chemicals.

maggieNYT Oh Jesus how ridiculous.

maggieNYT Really wow.

If I lived there... you wouldn't be nicotine testing my child. That's not your place. Smh

Won't the analysis of the students' blood or urine for nicotine be expensive?

maggieNYT Authoritarians in action. The state can inspect your bodily fluids at any time they chose. Move along citizen...

Ok cool, now what about the 18 yo seniors who aren't doing anything illegal?

sheilaaj But, I thought a women’s body is a women’s body; the Government should stay out of it! So confused on the current rules!!

Talk about raising a generation that will grow up to absolutely DESPISE you.

Why do we still allow schools to police what children do outside of school?

E Cigs saves lives. The studies are as phony as Global Warming ones. They want to tax!

But by all means smoke pot. Liberal logic on steroids.

maggieNYT That has to be a joke. The kids will take their chances and not give a f*ck. They will likely vape even more for rebellion.

I support this and perhaps even add suspension to students that smoke and vape. Time for action..

Something tells me Nebraska schools don’t have enough money to pay for such silliness.

It is not nicotine in those vapes...

maggieNYT “To deal with this unhealthy habit, we will ban students from healthy activities like sports.” Genius.

maggieNYT I like that this tweet implies this is nationwide and not one district in Nebraska. Great for “engagement”, I guess?

It’s not the schools job to monitor what kids do outside of school. It’s the parents.

Not sure how I feel about this 🧐

Soooo stupid

maggieNYT Nicotine is not illegal. This is absurd.

Just No.

maggieNYT Teachers too also

Good news :)

It’s not the schools right to randomly test students for anything.

We have better things to worry about! Like education!

I hope someone tells the school that you can get vape juice with zero mg nicotine, which would make the tests pointless.

SaysSimonson That’s not going to stand. Schools can’t control what kids do away from school. So, parents are fined if kids smoke after school? Why not test for drugs too then? I guess since sex is alright for kids, drugs are good too-WTF? Geez! Damn kids can’t even quit with the gum/patches!

Who the hell is paying for that I’m assuming RJ RENOLDS

What if a kid lives with smokers?

That's illegal search

Good job kids don't need to be smoking that young anyways that's how I got started

Why don't you randomly test them for knowledge ? The school is there to educate our children and while underage smoking is a concern its nothing compared to illiteracy. The funds needed to do these random nicotine tests will take away from crucial educational program funding.

And what business does a fricking school have doing this? How is this within their responsibility?

ACLU ACLUofNE

Wow you can vape non-nicotine products lmao

Who tf even lives in Nebraska

Too far

My high school had a smoking lounge.

This click bait headline leaves out a critical bit of information. Only students who choose to participate in extra curricular activities would be subject to random testing. Though I believe any 'random' testing or screening (including DUI checkpoints) is unconstitutional

When caffeine? They are both very similar in effect. I think they should start with the administrators...unpaid suspensions and termination.

there's a drug problem in the US and they're making their stand on nicotine?

The message this sends to students is awful. Of course, it’s a lesson that will teach this generation a hard lesson about importance of defending civil liberties.

Time to home school. They're taking measures too far. Overstepping their boundaries. Claiming ownership of everyone's bodies.

Schools are prisons

The fuck they will.

Um, fuck no...

Nicotine is not exclusively found in vapes therefore a positive test for nicotine does not mean vape is the cause.

Maybe all of the school district employees should be randomly tested for drugs too. Hmmm, wonder if they'd like that.

The same generation that smoked cigarettes outside the school and in the courtyard during school hours.🤔🧐

Is this legal?

Ok....I’m all for health and safety.....but cmon.

Things that make you go hmm.

Will the teachers be forced to only teach for the test results or can they prepare a proper curriculum?

Yeah, get em all on Adderall instead

Wisconsin school district to vote on fining parents of bulliesThe Wisconsin Rapids city council will be voting on a proposal to fine parents up to $313 if their kids are caught bullying. A nearby town already has a similar law and has rarely had to impose a fine -- a warning letter to parents has been enough. Talking to people before taking action -- That was good enough? Holyshit - What a concept. I thought only cops and judges could hand out tickets and/or fines? In California they bill parents for their loinspawn's juvie stay.
