Two decades after the name 'Columbine' became synonymous with a school shooting, the community surrounding the school is debating whether it's time to tear down a building that also became a beacon for people obsessed with the killings.

Signs outside Columbine High School are photographed, Thursday, June 13, 2019, in Littleton, Colo. The school district is considering the demolition of Columbine, the scene of a mass assault more than 20 years ago, and rebuilding the current school.

Then, a few days before the anniversary, a young woman described as obsessed with the attack flew to Colorado and bought a shotgun, killing only herself yet sparking lockdowns and new fears. School security has intercepted others with a similar infatuation with the crime and its teen perpetrators -- so-called Columbiners.

“It’s not just a building, it’s like a second home to us,” said Jenn Thompson, who as a 15-year-old huddled inside a science classroom during the attack. “It’s still standing 20 years later. It represents us, still standing 20 years later.” She hopes her own daughter, now 8 years old, can attend the school, home to about 1,700 students.

Conversations with victims’ families, survivors and current staff convinced district officials that changing the school’s name was a non-starter, said Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Jason Glass.

The time for tearing it down has long since past. It is a symbol of strength and resilience to the local community.I sincerely doubt reports that “thousands” of looky-loos visit. There is a memorial just steps from the school.Going to tear that down too? I live here.Leave it alone

Architect taking this on.

I think renaming it would solve any crazies worshipping it. It's the name, not the brick and mortar. Knocking a building down would be like banning gun models when used.

Tear it down...keep the gun nuts and weirdos away.

Those bricks trigger someone?

They are ignoring the real causes behind these attacks on schools. When you demolish a building just because there happened a shooting, you are doing what the shooters wanted with their act, that is leave their mark. Despite everything, people have to continue with their lifes.

If the name stays the same... If the location remains somewhat the same... Short of getting a new building, what will it solve? Tourists come and peek in the library windows - a library built after the shooting. If it attracts tourists and nuts, will a new building stop that?

Yes. Tear it down so those fucking ghouls will have to find something else to do

We cannot let them win, but I cannot imagine going there. Poor students.

DiscoxBloodbath Tear it down

What about renaming and re-designing the facade and some of the interior. Cheaper with same effect. Plus plan a big happy re-opening.

It should have been torn down the day after the shooting.

Should have been torn down 20 years ago
