Northumbria University yesterday announced it will monitor students’ social media profiles to create an “early warning system” that could detect mental illness and prevent suicide. We post so much online that social media may know more about our state than ourselves or our friends. In fact, one study from the University of Vermont has found that computers scanning a patient’s social media can diagnose depression better than a face-to-face consultation with a doctor.
