Jackie Goldberg, a veteran politician and educator who served on the Los Angeles school board three decades ago, will once again have a voice in the nation’s second-largest school district after a resounding win Tuesday for a seat in a special election.

LAUSD school board candidate Jackie Goldberg, left, votes at a polling station Tuesday. Her opponent, Heather Repenning, walks door to door canvassing in the Highland Park area after casting her ballot.

Goldberg won with 71.6% of the votes counted after polls closed Tuesday, not including provisional and some mail-in ballots. Though most charter reform requires state action, Los Angeles Unified is by far California’s largest district and adding as vocal an opponent as Goldberg could have far-reaching significance.

In majority-Latino LAUSD, this election will tip the board mostly whiteIn Tuesday's LAUSD board runoff election, two white candidates — Jackie Goldberg & Heather Repenning— will compete for the votes of majority-Latino District 5. sounds like a problem for the Democratic Party of Los Angles County, no? So what. This is why we have elections. What makes anyone think a white board member can't represent the interests of all ethnicities? LAT race baiting. Again. Good luck gringos I’m tired of Latinos thinking they can do a better job in a Latino neighborhood same thing with blacks. I want the best candidate to win because our future is at stake

This L.A. district is 80% non-white, but both school board candidates are whiteIn the May 14 LAUSD board runoff election, two white candidates — Jackie Goldberg and Heather Repenning— will compete for the votes of majority-Latino District 5. Designed destruction Please stop the bullsh*t. This identity politics is killing us. It's like you're saying all white people ill-intentioned. White people are just as offended being stereotyped as minorities are. Get a clue. you'll never succeed by pushing such bullsh*t. Expand this like it was nationwide and you will understand why a straight popular vote is not a good idea. Giving all the power to select neighborhoods (or states) because they have the most votes yields results like this.
