At a school in Western Sydney, a new model of education has students choosing what they want to learn and avoiding exams.

From year 9, the core curriculum is condensed into three days per week, and students are free to use the rest of the time to develop their own interests. They undertake projects in anything from piano composition, to video game development, to BMX riding."Studying for a test where content changes dramatically, in today's world, will not help the students to respond to real-world challenges and problems as they arise," Mr Miller said.

"With all these skills that we learn, you can't just search them on the internet, they're skills that you actually need to have. But critics of the inquiry-based approach taken by St Luke's said there was a danger students would miss out on essential content knowledge. "My major concern about the approach taken at St Luke's is that, at the moment, it really is an experiment," she said.

So an HSC from a catholic school will now have the same reputation as a degree from ACU, thee whom pays the fee gets the degree.

Smells like the unions want more power and we all know the Labor mob will give it to them.

The logic of the article is broken. The scheme is implemented from year 9 on, so why is literacy and numeracy an issue? You should not be entering year 9 if you have real problems in either area! If you have't nailed those fundamentals no method will work for you until you do.

Peak stupidity Australia. Just give em all a degree and be done with it.

F***ing typical. Spoilt little rich kids wanting to alter their curriculum, regardless of planned schooling. They must be ordered to complete their schooling, or theyre wasting our taxpayers money on private school type arrangements that destroy cohesion.

How about the sex. Has that been discontinued?

...sure, let the kids choose; what could go wrong?; nothing is as good as having the kids rule the roost...maximum stupidity and a conspicuous absence of intelligence from the education sector as usual...
