With many kids focused on taking extra classes and Honors/AP classes simply to raise GPA’s the administration decided to realign incentives so that students would feel more free to study areas they’re interested in. Maybe not a bad thing.
We are growing a bunch of bed wetting pansy kids. More and more I believe in private schools where this sort of BS isn’t pushed.
Once again we are trying to diminish the rewards of hard work and instead support mediocrity. We should be raising the bar and encouraging all students to strive for a better education. That would certainly improve their mental health!!!!
So instead of teaching children to reach for the stars. This school wants to teach them to reach for the sewers.

Our hs was so competitive that the top 10 kids had .0001 differences so we too have gotten rid of valedictorian. Also not too many AP art or AP theater courses means only the STEM kids get rewarded the weighted averages.

So dumb. I'm sorry by athletes are honored etc. Why not honor something that really matters. Working hard, learning, etc.

Competition is healthy. It motivates. Shielding students from it doesn't serve the purpose of enabling them to succeed in life, but quite the opposite.

For anyone older than 28 years old please realize that educational success is extremely competitive these days. Much more so then when I was in HS and college in the late 80s and early 90s. Christ's sake if you want to get into MIT you have to launch sushi into the stratosphere

If most of the people replying here had any idea how competitive selective college admissions is and how much more stressful it is now relative to 30 years ago, they would realize how antiquated the idea of a high school valedictorian is.
I have to agree. When I was in school it was customary for some folks to purposefully take easier courses just so they would enhance their chances of being recognized.

Most good schools have gotten rid of this ridiculousness. It's extremely difficult to determine the 'best', and the 'winner' is usually some try-hard who peaks in high school by studying trivium 8 hours a night. Horrible for mental health. Unnecessary stress.

Nobody ever remembers who it was anyway. I’m not all that sure in a lot of cases it wasn’t the parents pushing these kids so hard.

Why’re we intent on stymying the academic potential of our kids in this country, while other nations like China, Japan, Germany, etc, are pushing their kids even harder? I see it in sports, too, this equalizing of children, automatically handicapping superior athletes.
This is so ridiculous! The world is competitive! No one is going to run around and hold your hand and help you with life. If people think they are preparing the younger kids for the world by doing this they are extremely wrong!
Wrong just make everyone a valedictorian and give them a trophy.
