San Francisco parents rally around a teacher with cancer after school district requires her to pay for her own substitute

A group of parents in San Francisco are rallying around a second-grade teacher with breast cancer who was required to pay for her classroom's substitute teacher while she is on medical leave.

Teachers in the San Francisco Unified School District get 10 sick days per year, and then another 100 days of extended medical leave time. Susan Solomon, president of United Educators of San Francisco, said the union might take on this issue during the next round of bargaining talks:"As always, we look forward to making improvements in this and other parts of the contract."

State Sen. Connie Leyva, a Democrat from suburban Los Angeles and chair of the body's education committee, vowed to change that law.

The officials n this school district have no ❤. The teacher is ill!

This is just wrong

Evil school great kids

So horrible a teacher is docked while having breast cancer. How horrible. The Supreme Court , & our politicians never get docked while there out. Look at Ruth Bader Ginsburg a forever pay check wow

If they treat a teacher like this how do they treat the children?🤔🤔🤔

Love the support !! Our America makes me so proud sometimes

That’s how centralized planning works. Rationing

These parents are wonderful. This is another example of how despicable the ‘state’ has become. They steal our sweat and money and are very quick to recycle it to their corrupt friends via tax breaks and bailouts; These crooks that need to be deleted.

Usually teachers at the school or even in the district can donate sick days to co-workers. Is this not a thing in her district?

I think I’ve heard it all and then a story like this appears from SAN Francisco!!! Adding to her cancer stress having to pay for her substitute is outrageous! California: you can do better.

This is disgraceful and outrageous that a city would make a sick school teacher pay for a substitute teacher. For a city & state government that thinks they have answers for all of the worlds issues, boy they messed this one up!

Good.

How the hell is this legal?

Absolutely sickening!

Save your sick leave. Don’t use it for frivolous reasons. You may need it in the future and not get docked for not showing up at work. She has earned, paid sick leave. Call in sick, when you’re really sick.

Really sad that that is the best the richest country can do with health care for working people.

Good folks are extending assistance to show we're good people & ready to assists others in need. Thank you all

Only in California!

Their union opted out of disability. The article should mention this.

I'm really shocked that so many people don't know this is how it works for most teachers. You are given 10 sick days, and then you are docked for each additional day, no matter the circumstances.

This is not ok. We must prioritize education and those who teach our children.

And she won't have to pay taxes on that since it is a gift.

Thank you to all in the community who helped, when government fails yet again we all come together to support those around us, that’s America.

This should be illegal! It is certainly inhumane and unconscionable. How do these people sleep at night. Thank goodness she has wonderful, supportive and caring colleagues.

Good .

The powers that be—especially Republicans—want us poor, sick and stupid. This is why we have a morally deficient sociopath in the WH.

We really need to rethink our priorities. I applaud the compassion of those parents, but it shouldn't need to happen.

This is in a city with one billionaire for every 11,600 people there!

And people wonder why no one wants to become a Teacher.. WOW just aweful.

Set up a national fund me page. We will contribute.

Horrifying. Teachers don't get paid or have sufficient health care, and we do this to them. Also, we want them to carry guns.

WTF is going on in this world?

Good ole USA healthcare in full motion! Countries in Europe, UK,Switzerland,France,Scandinavian countries dance circles around our so called “healthcare”! I don’t hear any great ideas coming from Republicans!

I'm heartened by this but it just shouldn't be we need to do this or have crowd funding if we have medical ills.

A terrible flaw in the benefits package of teachers everywhere, and an echo of the terrible health care situation in the former United States of America. Where have all the heroes gone? Was a time when someone or some Noble group would rise up and change such injustice?!

Teachers in the San Francisco Unified School District get 10 sick days per year. But after a teacher uses the 10 sick days, the district bills them for the cost of a substitute, in keeping with a little-known provision of California's education code.

But somehow the union avoids any scrutiny. 🤔

Why would they agree to opt out of disability?

Sad. How come this city doesn’t like its own citizens.

This shouldn't have to happen. Teachers shouldn't be paying for illness or maternity leave or taking time to care for sick family members. Our system is horrifically flawed.

Yo this is messed up

Crowd sourcing compassion. SMH

Who in the right mind would do some thing like this is out of touch with the World.

Why would the union sign this contract?
