An 18-year-old student, just days away from graduation, was killed trying to protect his classmates. 9News

Kendrick Ray Castillo was a kind, hilarious jokester who was always ready to help his classmates, student Tuscany "Nui" Giasolli said.yesterday.Castillo and Nui were analysing comedy in English class and watching "The Princess Bride." That's when one of the shooters walked in."Next thing I know, he's pulling out a gun," she said. But Castillo wouldn't stay still. He lunged at the shooter, giving classmates enough time to hide, Nui said.

Devon Michael Erickson, the accused STEM School shooter, has fronted court for the first time since the incident - but remained largely silent. Kendrick's father, John, has remembered him as a patriotic hero and spoken about the moment of anxiety he experienced in trying to contact him as the shooting unfolded.

Bialy, a student Marine recruit, said the attacker got some shots off, fatally wounding Castillo. But Bialy says he was able to wrestle the attacker's firearm from him. "If you had suggested... that in 20 years, in 20 miles, we would have dealt with Columbine, Aurora theater, Arapahoe High School, the shooting of Zack Parrish and four other deputies, we'd have thought you mad," district attorney George Brauchler said Wednesday. The STEM school doesn't have a school resource officer, but it did have a private security guard, Spurlock said.

He said the guard drew his gun, took the suspect into custody and turned the suspect over to sheriff's deputies. But the guard still feels bad that he couldn't stop the entire attack. The motive remains a mystery

RIP Kendrick and condolences to family and friends. You are a true hero (unlike the gun toting NRA members - a right to bear arms for what - who never seem able to stop these killings). Again the children of the USA are being sacrificed for lack of gun controls! Feel good, folks?
