Warwick Public Schools announced on Facebook over the weekend that if money is owed on a paid, free or reduced lunch account, the student will be given a"sun butter and jelly sandwich" every day until the balance is paid in full or a payment plan is set up through the food service office.
The policy is effective starting Monday. The Facebook post received hundreds of comments from angry parents criticizing the new policy. In the past, students were served hot lunches, even if the had an outstanding balance, The Associated Press reported. The school district is owed more than $40,000 in outstanding lunch payments and cannot afford to absorb the costs, according to AP.
A local restaurant owner who twice offered to donate $4,000 to help pay down the debt was turned down both times, the AP reported. School officials said in a statement that all students must be treated equally, recommending that the donor take applications to decide who to donate the money to instead, according to the AP.
The school district offers the option for families to apply to receive free and reduced lunches, according to its website. Pending state legislation would make free hot lunches available for all students, regardless of income, AP reported.

I was a child in foster care and received a subsidized lunch. In HS I was expected to help clear trays of food and put them in the dishwasher. Other kids made fun of me; it was more than humiliating. Kids have enough to deal with; Take the damn donations and feed them!

Didn't realize this wasn't already a thing everywhere. In middle school and high school I never had enough money for food but I didn't want a sandwich every day so usually went to school without eating.
Bad move here. Bullying is a major issue in schools already. So now we’re giving more ammunition for kids to pick on other kids based on lunches.
Maybe the school district could invest some of that energy into creating an online portal for payment and a published list of ID number so students are not identifiable. Then allow anyone to go in and pay for a child. A warm meal for children should be a right not a privilege.

I send my kids to school almost everyday with a cold meal. The same cold meal that I take myself. Typically it’s a Peppered Turkey and Cheddar on Whole Wheat Bread. It cost about .75c on the high end. The “hot meals” these schools serve are not very good to begin with.

This is what they did when I was in school and I can confirm that it is humilating. They wouldnt even serve the cold lunch on the regular lunch tray, they brought it out in a brown paper bag and everybody who saw you walk away from the lunch line with that bag knew what it meant.

I pack my kid a lunch everyday. It is far healthier and tastier then anything they will serve at school. Real cooked cuts of meats, vegetables, fruits, teas, and/or water. Real food for real kids.
