KOTA KINABALU: For over four decades, pupils of a religious school in Kepayan near here have been studying in a wooden building that gets patched up only occasionally when private donors come forward to help.

None of this aid would turn Sekolah Agama Negeri-IPK Kepayan into a modern school with up to date amenities, but it does the job in making sure that pupils, most of whom are the offspring of policemen, have a school to go to.

The gesture touched the hearts of policemen, especially Sabah police chief Datuk Omar Mammah, who said that the school was the place for their children to study close to home. Omar said contributions from donors, many of whom were non-Muslims, was a testimony to strong relations between people of all races in Sabah.

Among the donors on Monday were Penampang MP Datuk Darell Leiking, Petronas Gas Bhd, Rastamas Sdn Bhd, and the district police chiefs of Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Papar and Tuaran.
