Critics are quick to ascribe motive to every cut, identifying a hatred for trees, books, learning, children and the environment. It’s absurd, but why feed the perception?

Eliminating a multi-billion-dollar budget deficit is not an easy or popular job, but neither is it a blanket excuse to make spending changes that fail the sounds-stupid test. The Ontario government has failed that test repeatedly in recent days, and it is hurting its credibility.

Take the cuts to library service, which provide inter-library loans and administrative services to libraries in small communities. The government is cutting its support in half to save $1.5 million in the southern part of the province. This means that library users in small communities, the type typically represented by PC MPPs, won’t have access to books from larger cities. Not exactly a winner.

It’s a bit disturbing that the government is relying on such penny-ante stuff so early in its budget-balancing fight. There are more productive areas to examine. The government claims its versions of these murky programs feature new goals and enhanced effectiveness. Maybe, but that will be difficult to judge. In opposition, the PCs repeatedly called for the Liberals to post information on who got what and the result was produced. The auditor general demanded it, too. That information was finally posted in 2016, but hasn’t been updated since.

Or “how stupid will this sound?” Or even “does this sound stupid enough?”

Articles like this truly bring out the scale of the disaster that the Liberals left Ontario in, this is going to take generations to fix, thank you Premier Ford for having the courage to begin the repair

You mean that raising high school class sizes to around 40 won't improve 'resiliency'? & private schools don't advertise small classes as a selling point Ford's cuts targeted the students and not the 'evil teacher unions'. He generated so much bad press for himself. onpoli

He's a used car salesman, and a con artist, people voted for him because they thought he could rid Ontario of corruption instead he's destroying the lives of the very people that voted him in. He's a one term disaster on a mission to destroy Ontario!

He can’t do that, because he can’t tell the difference. With Ford as premier how can Ontario be taken seriously?

It doesn’t matter how he explain the cut, they will call it evil and call for the guillotine. These same people can’t tell you just how big the government should be.

TORONTO—Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath apologized to Premier Doug Ford Wednesday for posing in a picture with a sign that said “F— Ford.” The picture was taken with Horwath, NDP MPP Jamie West and a protester at the rally challenging Ford’s changes to health care. Fat Pig

Kelly McParland: Doug Ford under siege from the Teacher-Snowbird-Trees axisThe problem with ‘austerity’ — as ‘progressives,’ activists, advocates and allies insist on labelling any attempt to recognize that the money pot isn’t bottomless — is that … Snow birds can pay for private insurance or stay home. Maybe it's because he doesn't cater to them like other parties. The union tells the teachers who to vote for so they can get the most snowbirds should pay a special tax since they don't pay gst for six months and load up their vehicles on the way home. cheap rich people
