Two people were killed and four were wounded in a shooting Tuesday at the University of North Carolina's Charlotte campus.

University of North Carolina Charlotte Police Chief Jeff Baker gives an update to the media after a shooting on the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus in University City, Charlotte, on April 30, 2019. - At least two people were killed and several wounded in a shooting at the University of North Carolina's Charlotte campus, staff and local media reported. Police officers were successfully able to intercept the suspect before he left campus.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department identified the shooter as 22-year-old Trystan Andrew Terrell. According to government figures, 40,000 people were killed by firearms in the United States in 2017 — two thirds of them suicides — the highest annual toll in five decades. Efforts have always proved divisive, and Republican lawmakers have been highly successful at preventing what they describe as an assault on their right to bear arms under the Second Amendment of the US Constitution.
