Primary school pupils will benefit from free breakfast clubs under Labour's plans unveiled in the King's Speech today. In his speech at the State Opening of Parliament, the monarch set out Labour's legislative agenda for the coming months.
A number of schools already have their own free or subsidised breakfast clubs, some of them funded by companies including Greggs and Kellogg's. But the new legislation will mean they're available to all. "Sometimes the kids don't want something before leaving for school either, but are hungry when they get there, so at least I know they will be able to get something before class."
Speaking before the general election, the now Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said she wanted every child to have the opportunity of a free nutritious breakfast before starting their day – regardless of family income. Anti-poverty charity Turn2us has welcomed today's speech but says it wants to see 'more concrete commitments to tackling the rising levels of poverty in the UK'.
The Children’s Charities Coalition – Action for Children, Barnardo’s, National Children's Bureau, NSPCC and The Children’s Society – has also responded and reiterated that more support is needed.
