‘Winning and losing is second to what you learn from competing’

Saturday marked the annual La Costa Canyon Semper Fi Tournament, the last 7-on-7 event before the start of fall practices. Mt. Carmel edged Imperial 28-27 for the title, breaking up a two-point conversion attempt on the day’s last play.Imperial beat Steele Canyon , Tri-City Christian , El Capitan and La Costa Canyon en route to the title game.

With quarterback Brady Palmer at the controls, Cathedral Catholic beat Torrey Pines 20-19 in the title game. The Dons’ defense batted down a pass in the end zone on the last play of the 30-minute, running-clock game.“That’s my first passing championship in 38 years,” said Dons coach Sean Doyle. “Honestly, I don’t know what it means.

• Imperial quarterback Jayden Ayala had moments of brilliance at La Costa Canyon, establishing himself as a player to watch. • New St. Augustine coach Ron Caragher appears to be a hands-on teacher. The Saints went 2-2 at the Semper Fi, losing to Mt. Carmel in the championship round. They appear to have a quarterback in tall left-hander Vincent Smith.

• San Diego State hosted two weekends of 7-on-7 competition. Mount Miguel went 4-0 and won Bracket A in the first week. Yuma Catholic won Bracket B and Granite Hills took Bracket C.
