Labour's new Education Bill will make it a legal requirement for councils to keep track of 'ghost pupils' who are regularly absent.

Labour plan to launch a new national register to keep track of kids skipping school. New Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wants the register to also include children who are being homeschooled.

They also plan to use artificial intelligence to improve coordination between schools, councils, GPs and the education watchdog, Ofsted. Parents who homeschool will be expected to provide information about their child’s education to councils. One plan is to give each child a unique reference number – similar to an NHS number – to identify and keep track of them.
