'Biodegradable' plastic shopping bags still able to function after three years: researchers

File photo: A shopper leaves a grocery store carrying his groceries in plastic bags Tuesday, August 30, 2016 in Brossard, Que. Researchers from the University of Plymouth in the U.K. found that plastic bags touted as ‘biodegradable’ and ‘compostable’Research Fellow Imogen Napper and Professor Richard Thompson studied the decomposition of five plastic bag materials that are common to the U.K., in air, soil and sea environments - places that would be affected if the bags became litter.

Dr. Mohini Sain, professor at the University of Toronto and Director of the Centre for Biocomposites and Biomaterials Processing, told CTV News in an email that there is “no clear definition of biodegradability” in Canada, and that if products claim to be biodegradable then they should “specify the time period to complete biodegradation.”

Sain said that in the past, companies in Canada used pure PLA to make plastic bags that would have been biodegradable in a composting medium – but that he was unsure if the practice was ongoing.

In Ft Mac they banned the use of plastic bags about 9 years ago and it made a huge difference.

well if the gov really wants to do something about plastic then ban plastic bag. That would be a good first step. Better to do that than put another tax on it for us. I guess actually going after the use of plsstic is more than our gov can comprehend.

So ya buy the bag leave the store then all of a sudden you have no bags and your groceries are on the ground because the air disinegrated them. Oookkkkkkk

There's a huge difference between biodegradable, oxodegradable & compostable. The first 2 can break down but into tiny pieces that can never be recovered similar to the micro-bead problem. Compostable bags break down in about 18 months or sooner in a managed system.

Why not make paper bags with handles? Possibly reinforced in case of heavy items or products like ice cream containers that can produce moisture during warm temperatures. We don't need plastic bags anymore.

What are we waiting for? Lets ban them..

Can't carry much in them though. Especially be careful carrying milk. They break and your milk crashes to floor along with all your bag contents.

time to go back to paper? 🤡🌎
