Two children have died after an infection outbreak at a primary school in Liverpool. The headteacher at Millstead Primary School in Everton expressed the school community's devastation upon learning of the deaths of the two children, who were said to have "filled their classes with joy."
However, the UKHSA has stated that the causes of the children's deaths are yet to be confirmed and are "unlikely to be due to Giardia". Giardiasis, caused by tiny parasites known as giardia lamblia, can lead to symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps, flatulence, and bloating. While it can cause discomfort, it is generally not a serious health risk and can be easily treated with antibiotics.
"The deaths are unlikely to be due to giardia. Giardia usually causes a self-limiting gastrointestinal illness which can spread easily in households and school settings." The Liverpool Echo reported last month on an outbreak of Giardia at Millstead School, prompting public health interventions to control the surge in cases linked to the institution, which serves children with special educational needs.
Transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals or animals, as well as the ingestion of tainted water, food, or beverages, giardiasis typically resolves within a week post-treatment, albeit occasionally it might persist longer.
