My eldest daughter is three years old, so I am at the beginning of an annual dilemma: how much effort should I make?
On parenting forums there are endless people asking for advice and launching polls on whether they should even take part , while on the other end of the scale others are expressing shame for taking it all far too seriously in 2023 and worrying about looking extremely “uncool” in their pursuit of victory.
So I canvassed opinion among friends on how they approach their respective mums and dads’ races. The dads were very forthcoming with their advice and initially fairly predictable, with responses including: “second place is first loser, nothing but gold!”, “act like you don’t care, but then run like wind ” and “I have yet to participate in one, but when I do, I will be fiercely competitive.
Whether they were desperate to win or not though, one thing was consistent among all the responses from parents: coming last or making no effort is definitely not an option. You’re either going for dominant victory or claiming the prize for Best Effort – there is no space for anything else.
