Opinion: This week the Tennessee Senate can give children now trapped in failing schools a lifeline to a decent education by passing a historic school voucher bill

This week the Tennessee Senate can give children now trapped in failing schools a lifeline to a decent education. Let’s hope the Volunteer State Senators seize the opportunity—and pass the voucher bill pushed by Gov. Bill Lee.

The path hasn’t been easy. On Tuesday the bill squeaked through a Senate committee. Later the same day the House was deadlocked 49-49 for 40 minutes until Republican Jason Zachary switched his vote to yea after he was assured his county won’t be affected though it’s still in the bill’s language.

Congratulations

This plan is similar to the lifeboat plan on the titanic. Lifeboats for a few. Wouldn't it have saved more lives if they fixed the boat.

Never mind a school voucher. How about a teacher voucher? Students can now have access to the greatest teachers in the world via technology. No need to go to the school 'marm' while the crops don't need tending. Great teachers can be private contractors!

Or you could... You know... Fix the failing schools. This is awful legislation.

Translation: Rich white kids get free education at private schools where they don’t have to mingle with the riff raff.

Great America

My kids attended private schools at times. I paid out of pocket. Is there a problem with that ?

Making their schools better seems like a much more effective use of money and resources. Charter schools on average aren’t any better and some are outright scams.

Vouchers won’t work. God forbid if our law makers try and fix a broken school system. Pathetic.

Hm. No, that’s not how this plays out.

Who are we kidding? YOU know what’s behind vouchers vs paying decent teacher salaries.

And the kids left behind in those failing public schools - what about them? They will sink faster?

No

what a bunch of sick right-wing propaganda
