Bolton Council debated Labour's possible tax change which could affect Bolton School, one of the largest independent day schools in the country

‘Immense pressure’ could be placed on class sizes at Bolton’s state schools if VAT is imposed on private education fees, councillors have heard. The Labour Party election manifesto pledges to end private schools’ VAT exemption.

He urged the council to agree that the imposition of VAT on school fees is not a sustainable policy. He said: “There is already massive pressures on our state schools and a growing number of students. “That seven per cent is around 30,000 in the whole national school population of nine million. The IFS also tell us that the average price of private school fees has already risen by 55 per cent in the last 10 years but the proportion of children being privately educated did not alter.

Coun Nadim Muslim, said: “This is an attack on aspiration. Those who are rich will still send their children to private school.
