A team of researchers at the University of South Alabama are taking part in a project to collect real time hurricane data.
USA Department of Civil, Coastal, and Environmental Engineering professor Dr. Bret Webb says the set-up is simple. The Sentinels are driven to the coast, set up on the beach, and then they are left until after the storm passes. The high-tech towers consist of four legs and a mast which are built to withstand the same extreme factors.
Webb says that three sentinels have been built so far. The University of South Alabama is helping to build two more towers that will have additional sensors to measure water quality and waves.
