Three drop-off locations — or texted donations — will benefit educators and students at Harlandale and East Central ISDs.

A local nonprofit is asking for the community’s help preparing teachers for a successful — and more affordable — start to the new school year. The United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County will gather donations for its sixth annual Write Start Project, a back-to-school initiative allowing educators to check an important item off their to-do list faster. “Each year, countless teachers fund school supplies out of their own pocket without reimbursement,” a news release says.

With around 380,000 teachers statewide, according to the Texas Education Agency, that comes out to around $785 per teacher. This year’s effort aims to reduce that financial burden for teachers at Harlandale and East Central independent school districts. Last year, the school supplies went to classrooms in Judson and Somerset ISDs.
