A first-of-its-kind project to document Old Plateau and New Plateau cemeteries in Africatown wraps up this year, as volunteers work through the summer to record each grave.

Jen Knutson, assistant director of the Archaeology Museum at the University of South Alabama, measures a grave in New Plateau Cemetery in Africatown on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 in Mobile, Ala. Knutson helped document the graves as part of a project to record all of the graves in Old Plateau and New Plateau cemeteries.

“It’s empowering to teach a community to do their own historic preservation,” said Alexandra Jones, an archaeologist who leads the project.
