Dr Karan Rajan, a Sunderland University lecturer, has taken to TikTok to settle the age-old debate - can you just slice the mould off cheese and eat it?

The perennial debate on whether you can simply cut off mould from cheese and eat the rest has been a topic of contention worldwide.

"The visual mould you see on food is just like the tip of an iceberg. You can't see what's below the surface and in this case, the fungus penetrating into the cheese." Dr Rajan adds: "And you also don't wanna make any contact with the mould because you're introducing cross-contamination. This cheese cutting margin only applies to hard cheeses.
