John Sharp previously served as Texas' comptroller.

John Sharp , chancellor of Texas A&M University System, announced he will retire after 13 years leading the system. Here, Sharp spoke at a groundbreaking ceremony for Texas A&M-Fort Worth’s first building when construction began last summer. The expansion in Tarrant County is among many of such efforts Sharp oversaw during his tenure.

He previously served as the state’s comptroller, a member of the Texas Railroad Commission and in the Legislature, as both a state senator and House representative. He ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 1998 and 2002, losing to Rick Perry and David Dewhurst, respectively. The DMN Education Lab deepens the coverage and conversation about urgent education issues critical to the future of North Texas.
