While the university sector reels from a raft of measures designed to limit net migration, there is growing support for caps on overseas student numbers.

“Without such a cap, the allure of international student fees becomes irresistible and will inevitably go well beyond 50 per cent.” Amendments to legislation that will allow the introduction of caps, which are strongly opposed by others in the sector, will be debated in parliament this week.125 per cent increase in non-refundable visa application fees

However, other universities that had been riding a boom of enrolments from India, Nepal and Pakistan have been hit by far higher visa rejection rates due to concerns that many are non-genuine students and are simply using their visa to enter Australia to access the labour market. That, in turn, has diminished their standing with the Department of Home Affairs, making further applications more likely to be heavily scrutinised.
