Summer is the time of year when most people carve out time to appreciate the outdoors. Whether that means a multi-day camping, biking or rafting trip, or a week at the beach or the lake, we do what we can to reinvigorate ourselves through the majesty of nature. These nature-focused trips help put our mind at ease, allowing us to hit the reset button and shake off the endless commotion of everyday life.

Here’s a biologist’s primer on the dangers associated with each of these common fears, and what you can do to take necessary precautions. Remember, just because the risk is small doesn’t mean it can be ignored.get a lot more credit on the “danger spectrum” than they deserve–especially when you dig into the statistics. But it’s not surprising that they do.

To put things in context, there have been 141 recorded fatalities from shark attacks worldwide. This is according to data from the, a comprehensive database of known shark attacks dating back to the 1500s. The data isn’t perfect , but it’s the best information we have on shark attacks–and it gets better each year.
