Prices at the Pumps - June 26, 2024 #saltwire #pricesatthepumps #gasprices #fuel #canada #updateYou can’t change history. True. But we can, and should, update the validity of what we were taught in the past.

My recent fascination with history and my new learnings of how this country came to be are being fed by my avid watching of “The Curse of Oak Island” on the History Channel. Treasure hunters have been digging up Oak Island since the 18th century. Discoveries over the last few years are having a great impact on our perceptions of the history of this province – perhaps even North America.

I know that as Cape Bretoners, we are thrilled to watch Baddeck numismatist Sandy Campbell, of Proof Positive Coins Ltd., appear on the show. He uses his expertise to identify coins that have been occasionally found in the treasure digs undertaken by brothers Rick and Marty Lagina of Michigan. The Government of Canada designated last month as National Indigenous History Month in order to “honour the histories, achievements and resilience of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, who have cared for this land since time immemorial.”

I think the expression: “time immemorial” is a wonderful way to describe the amount of blood, sweat, tears, time and love the Mi’kmaq have given to this land under Nova Scotian’s feet. We should be grateful that they allow us to share it in a gracious and generous manner. MacDonald says staff do an annual inventory and pay particular attention to the children and youth collection.
