Firefighters work to extinguish the Stebbins' school fire on Wednesday, June 27, 2024. ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Governor Mike Dunleavy has declared a disaster for the village of Stebbins after a fire destroyed the community’s only school and nine other school district buildings, including teacher housing Wednesday night.
The Nome Volunteer Fire Department arrived to fight the fire, but according to the fire department the water tanks ran out before they could contain it. Village residents joined in to help fight the fire, and the fire was contained on Thursday morning. Officials said that the village’s water storage tank is up and running again.
She attended the school from Kindergarten until High School. Her family was on the scene helping fight the fire. The school is a central part of the village. Carr said that it served as the community center. The school was a center for potlaches, cultural dances, basketball tournaments and shelter from brutal weather.
Carr said that the community has found support amid all the fires with neighboring villages. She said the St. Michael village helped Stebbins through the fire on Wednesday.
