John Carroll University has extended leases for people living in three apartment buildings not yet zoned for students by the city of Shaker Heights

Three apartments will open for students in 2024, three more need rezoning from Shaker HeightsSHAKER HEIGHTS/UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - People living in three buildings around Fairmount Circle in Shaker Heights — many elderly — are receiving new leases, giving them a year reprieve.

The University’s plan to turn the apartments into student housing still has people living there uncertain of their future. “I’m seventy-years-old, and John Carroll is effectively evicting me and my wife from the home that I have lived in for twelve-and-a-half years,” Ira Krumholz, a long-time Shaker resident, told City Council in February.

“We were disappointed that Shaker Heights established amendments that restricted the intended use of the three buildings around Fairmount Circle,” said Scanlan.
