Rendell Hoagland and Cindy Warren were arrested on charges of attempted murder and kidnapping charges in the death of Malinda Hoagland. Twelve-year-old Malinda Hoagland died on May 4 after she was brought to the hospital with a faint pulse, only weighing 50 pounds.
The documents said she had unexcused or illegal absences from school for the entire month of December. According to court documents, Hoagland told police Children, Youth and Families was notified in the Fall about an instance where Malinda was selling food at school. The court documents outline multiple times where Malinda was chained to furniture in their home and “berated” by Warren and Hoagland, all of which was recorded and saved to a home video security system.
Center for Children’s Justice founder, Cathleen Palm said there are so few ways in which children attending school online can ask for help if they need it. “The difference between traditional brick and mortar school and cyber school is there is some moments where a child can talk one on one with someone,” Palm said. “If I’m literally always in my home and potentially the person who is harming me or intimidating me is right there with me, I don’t have that same kind of opportunity.”
