The LAUSD board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a resolution directing the superintendent to report on the feasibility — including costs — of a 2020 ballot measure that would lower the voting age to 16 in school district elections.

, Tyler believed that the interests of two warring powers who often fund elections — the teachers union and charter school supporters — get more attention than students.

The last time the voting age changed nationally, from 21 to 18, was in 1971 when young people demanded the right to vote during the Vietnam War — the justification then for many was that if they could sacrifice their lives for their country, they should be able to vote too.

Opening school board elections to teens makes sense because students are more in tune than many adult voters to school needs, said Arianna Romero, 18, a senior at Mendez High School in Boyle Heights who rallied at the meeting Tuesday. Her peers are also more likely to get involved in voting in an election that directly affects them, she said, and that process will help prepare them for future elections.

Voting at a young age also increases the likelihood that candidates and political parties will pay attention to these groups in the future, Diaz said. Campaigns have limited funds, and they spend money on reaching the people most likely to vote — one major indication is whether someone has voted before. If a student votes in high school, she gets added to voting rolls and campaign lists and becomes “lucrative” to political parties, candidates and issue campaigns, Diaz said.

Ridiculous. Let young people enjoy their childhoods while they still can. They are not emotionally mature enough to withstand a good propaganda campaign. Neither are many adults btw.

Yo, hot Cheetos bag if you vote for me.

Do you know that the male brain does not mature until his late twenties? Did you know that the brains of individuals stop maturing when they begin to regularly use drugs, which means some people never mature. Life experience matters. Make it age 30!

Way. What a waster of time and money.

I wonder why the school district is a complete mess.

More proof lausd is run by idiots.

Of all the recent bad ideas in politics, letting juveniles vote is one of the most asinine. A 16 y/o has far less impulse control, maturity, or life experience than the average adult. I question why we don’t raise the voting age to 21 for the same reasons.

Dumb

16 years old to vote? They can't even wipe their asses properly.

Why not lower the age to 12?

New tactics from newsome group. Chaos will increase in CA. And this beautiful state turn into a sh.t h..e.

Democrab wants to take advantage the number of young voters after they manipulated these kids mind to serve for its own interest. 🥴👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 ? To send people at school district to re-educated. Very bad thing for CALIFORNIA.

Have you talked to a 16 year old lately? Too many 20 something year old are still in their extended adolescence.

This is nuts. Most 16 yr old's don't have the maturity to vote. Neither do many 60 year old's but we have to draw the line somewhere.

Hell naw!!! I think it should be raised personally.

Lower the age but mandatory draft as well

16 yos can’t buy cigarettes, or alcohol, can’t drive a passenger in a car, need parental consent for medical treatment (they can get an abortion without it though) but they’re mature enough to vote? BS. The LAUSD has probably a 95% democrat demographic. That’s what this is about

Sounds like the folks who approved this don't have the maturity to vote either...

Most of these kids still have there parents making their lunch and giving them money. Clearly this is a play for votes.

Does the LAUSD already understand the state votes blue? There should be a piling on penalty for this! What next? Inmates get to vote… Oh wait Bernie says…

NOT FEASIBLE, THEIR BRAIN IS NOT FULLY DEVELOPED!!!

I don’t think they should be voting until they see how much of their paycheck goes towards taxes....

When I was 16 I peed in a tuba because I thought it would be funny.

I like this idea...but why stop at school board races? City councils, county leaders, legislators, governors, Congressional members, even the president make crucial decisions regarding students' lives -- so why not consider giving students' more voice in electing them all?

They may lack life experience or the knowledge to make informed decisions. Same thing they said about African americans years ago. Dumb$$es....

Liberals would let Russians vote if they would vote like Mexicans and teenagers

a 16 year old should never be given a right to vote.

16 year old not mature to do anything... they barely pass their driving test

What the hellis wrong with our society? This is where we are?

Shit let’s do 4

Or 10

Or 12

Why not to 14?

16 year olds are not emotionally or intellectually mature to vote. You won’t allow them to have a gun or drink but voting you seem they are able to handle. You treat history and civics classes as electives. God help this state and country.

😂😂😂😂😂😂🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

An estimated additional 60,500 residents would be eligible to vote if such a ballot measure passed, according to L.A. Unified spokeswoman Barbara Jones.
