New president, dean and CEO at NOSM University, Dr. Michael Green says as people continue to struggle to find family doctors, making that discipline an attractive career choice for future physicians is all the more important

It will be five months yet before Dr. Michael Green assumes his new job as NOSM University’s new president, vice-chancellor, dean and CEO on Nov. 1.

"They've done a fantastic job in really training strong rural, generalist physicians; lots of family doctors coming out of NOSM. So, I've always followed that part of it well," Green said in a recent interview. Green added that he is also passionate about the importance of family physician as a valid specialty for medical students and he said NOSM had embraced that, right from the first day the medical school opened its doors, back in September, 2005.

Green said there are success stories of family medicine practices being sustainable for new young physicians and much can be learned from those successes. He added that academic medicine is not something that carries on in isolation. Green said new family physicians will have to be aware of the worsening opioid crisis.
