An independent school in Cape Town has been shortlisted for the World’s Best School Prize for Overcoming Adversity.Christel House South Africa, an independent kindergarten through secondary school in Ottery, has been named in the top 10 shortlist for one of the World’s Best School Prizes, comprising the Community Collaboration, Environmental Action, Innovation, Overcoming Adversity and Supporting Healthy Lives categories.
Christel House provides free character-based, career-focused education to children from severely under-resourced communities in Cape Town. It focuses on providing children with long-term support via free healthcare, daily transport, nutritious meals, school uniforms and school supplies, as well as psychosocial and family support.

Find car listingsThe school’s students, who come from homes where the combined family income is no more than R1 500 per month, typically face food insecurity, overcrowding, unemployment and community discord, including gang violence, exposure to substance abuse and gender-based crime.
Furthermore, all 50 shortlisted schools will participate in a public vote, of which the winner will receive the Community Choice Award and membership to T4 Education’s Best School to Work programme to help them support teacher well-being and solve the teacher recruitment and retention crisis.The top three finalists of the five World’s Best School Prizes will be announced in September, followed by the winners in November.
