Gavin Newsom proposedThis restriction comes as Newsom aims to improve the mental health of students, which he said can deteriorate because of social media."Cell phones can be a really good way for parents to reach children in case of an emergency," said Davin Smith, a mother of a 7-year-old daughter.
Anthony teaches life skills to students and said the usage of cell phones is an issue in the classroom, but said Newsom's proposal is dismissing the problem, rather than providing a legitimate solution. Other parents said they think monitoring cell phone usage is a decision for schools and parents, not the state.AB 272 affirms that a school district, county offices of education, and charter schools can regulate a student's cell phone possession and usage during school hours.
