A new study claims one in five Mancunian children are taught in schools which don’t have any green space.
However, the same data also suggested that two in five families lived less than a five minute walk from a park, and a similar figure again lived between five to fifteen minutes away. But Joanne Foulds, a teacher at Fairfield Road Primary School in nearby Droylsden, was ‘saddened’ with the findings.“The lack of green spaces can significantly impact children's daily lives, making it harder for them to stay active, enjoy nature, and maintain mental well-being,” she explained.
“The fire ruined the viewing platform and the pond and edging plants,” she went on. “Parents and the community raised £1,600 but this was not enough to pay to restore the pond area. Manchester City Council appears to welcome the launch of the grant scheme, with a spokesperson telling the LDRS ‘any additional funding to help our schools support our children and young people and to help make the city even greener is however always welcome’.
