Book Banning News

School Board,Censorship

A book about banning books just proved life is as strange as fiction by getting banned itself.

" in 2017. The story follows a fourth-grader attempting to check out her favorite library book, which has been banned after her classmates' parents complained. She then finds herself in "an unexpected battle over book banning, censorship, and who has the right to decide what she and her fellow students can read."

In an extreme stroke of irony, Jennifer Pippin, a parent at the Indian River county school district had an issue with "Ban This Book" for antagonizing those who ban books. The school-board members who agreed with her claimed it was "teaching rebellion of school-board authority". Pippin's outcry prompted the school board to vote on the banning of the book. The motion passed with a vote from 3-2, despite the district's book review committee previously giving the book the greenlight.

Pippin has another connection to banned books. The Moms for Liberty is a far-right political organization that is responsible for many book bans . Pippin just so happens to be the chair for“They banned the book because it talks about the books that they have banned and because it talks about book banning,” the book's author, Alan Gratz, said.

Alan Gratz is a bestselling author behind historical nonfiction like "Refugee" and other young adult novels like the "League of Seven" series.
