The family and friends of Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr. will say their final goodbyes at a service hosted at his high school alma mater.

According to the Southern Miss Athletics Department, Daniels, a Lucedale native, played his first season with the Golden Eagles last fall after transferring from Ole Miss.LUCEDALE, Miss. -

Daniels was just 21 years old when he was shot and killed while sitting in his car by his Hattiesburg apartment on Tuesday, January 11.The local community, along with Daniels’ family and friends, quickly took to social media to express their shock and grief as they struggled to figure out what happened.

According to his coaches, he was a standout player from George County High School who played at Ole Miss before transferring to USM in 2023.“MJ had a contagious smile that could brighten anyone’s day,” the obituary reads.

Daniels’ family will hold a visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at the George County High School Gymnasium, with a funeral service to follow.
