COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The state of Ohio mistakenly overpaid K-12 school districts and private-school voucher programs as much as $30 million during the past year because of a glitch in the state’s funding formula, according to state officials.

The amount each school district was overpaid depended on its size. The overpayments represent a relatively small percentage of the state’s K-12 education spending, said Dan Tierney, Gov. Mike DeWine’s spokesman. Ohio budgeted $9.6 billion for the school foundation funding formula for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.Senate President Matt Huffman, a Lima Republican, said he learned of the “glitch” just hours before he shared it with reporters after Wednesday’s Senate session.
