PETALING JAYA: The 2,200 matriculation seats offered to Indian students for the 2018 academic year was a one-off initiative by the previous government, the Education Ministry said.

“The 90% bumiputra and 10% non-bumiputra intake policy for matriculation, done based on meritocracy, will be maintained this year.”

“The original aim of the ministry’s matriculation programme is to develop bumiputra students’ potential in science, technology and professional through quality pre-university education.Similarly, it said the 1,000 seats offered to Chinese students last year by the Pakatan Harapan government was a one-off, based on the needs and vacancies at the time.

In his email, Kamalanathan asked about the distribution status of matriculation seats and the actual figure allocated for Indian students.Under the 2019 matriculation programme, the ministry said that 60% of seats had been allocated to students from the lower income group .“The remaining 40% are for middle income and high income earners.”
