The rumours started in our second year. “I heard he takes her to the pub on the corner every Saturday because students are never there on weekends,” my friend whispered to me as we ate lunch on the lawn opposite the university library. That wasn’t the first time I’d hear about a student sleeping with a professor during my time at university. Nor would it be the last.
Frankly, I’m surprised it has taken universities this long to wise up. After all, what better example is there of a power dynamic ripe for exploitation than that between a teacher and student? Think about it: the desire to impress them. The compulsion to please them. The influence they have over your professional and personal successes. Not only could this hinder a student’s academic progress, it could also easily lead to the student being manipulated.
I wasn’t friends with the girl rumoured to be in a relationship with our English professor; she was nice enough, but kept herself to herself. After word of the affair broke, our classes became a weekly opportunity to fastidiously hunt for clues of its legitimacy. A subtle look here, a nervous tone of voice there.
But in the years since, I’ve thought about that girl a lot. If it was true, how did it start? Did he pursue her out of curiosity, or did she pursue him out of admiration? Was he using her to reclaim some lost misspent youth ? Whatever it was, it felt abusive in its intent.
