The boisterous crowd of activists from across Pennsylvania demanding they break ties with billionaire Jeffrey Yass and his support for school vouchers.

Citizens from all across Pennsylvania descended on the state Capitol on Monday to demand senators who accepted money from billionaire voucher supporter Jeffrey Yass to cut ties with him and his political action committees and oppose vouchers. The activists shown here made their way into Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward's office and waited until they got a chance to speak to Ward's staff. June 10, 2024 Jan Murphy | jmurphy@pennlive.

After getting turned away from Martin’s office without a chance to speak to the senator or his staff, John Barnett, a volunteer for Power Interfaith which is part of the #AllEyesOnYass Coalition, said, “We’re concerned that Senator Martin is spending much more attention listening to a billionaire. It’s a billionaire that has a different agenda than most of the citizens of Pennsylvania. We care about public education. Jeffrey Yass wants to privatize our public education system.

Protesters who made their way into Ward’s office were able to meet with her legislative team to share their perspectives on education despite not following the protocol of setting up a meeting in advance, according to her spokeswoman Erica Clayton Wright. The protest is part of broader effort by a coalition working to curb the influence Yass and his money has on state educational policies and in particular, the push for athat is teed up for a vote in the Senate. Voucher supporters want it to become part of the 2024-25 state budget deal.
