Firefighters raced to Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge on Sunday evening following reports of a fire in the area.
The building affected was the former Gartsherrie Primary School, but it is now derelict and thankfully there have not been any injuries in the blaze. Many of its windows, originally boarded up when it went out of use, are now caved in with flames filling the inside of the school and poking out the windows.
The roof appears to be almost completely caved in and a thick cloud of smoke could be seen billowing from the top of the building.Local residents were pictured standing and watching in horror at the scenes as 999 crews worked to extinguish the fire. The feelings of sadness were echoed by local MSP Fulton MacGregor, who said:"Sad night, especially for those with memories of attending school there."A spokesperson said:"Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge is closed at Frederick Street and Blair Road due to an ongoing fire at a derelict building. There are no reports of any injuries. As a precaution, we are advising local residents to remain indoors and keep their windows and doors closed.
