Local school districts are grappling with chronic absenteeism, even though school is out for the summer. That is because, in Texas, school funding is based on a

verage attendance, and attendance never rebounded completely to pre-pandemic levels.

“We’re one of six or eight states that still fund on attendance,” said Ken Zarifis, the president of the AISD employee union, Education Austin. “There’s a way to invest in our schools without even looking at recapture. One is to pay schools based on enrollment rather than attendance to make sure we increase the daily, average daily allotment. “There are 73,707 students currently enrolled in AISD.
