Just over half of Tasmanian students are finishing year 12, and it could spell disaster for the future of tertiary education and industries in the state.
In a Stateline interview, University of Tasmania vice-chancellor Rufus Black said the state was "not ready for the future with its education system" and called on the government to urgently make changes to support teachers and keep students "on track". Professor Black said the figures showed why fixing the education system needed to be made a top priority.
A year 12 completion rate of 90 per cent was crucial for addressing many of the "deep challenges" Tasmania has, Professor Black said."In a time that we know that if people don't have a good job, the cost of living challenges are overwhelming. "We should take a lesson out of the book of , what do they do? How did they tackle that challenge? From early on, they're getting students and staff monitoring their progress," he said.
