This week Indigenous rapper Birdz found himself at the centre of a political furore after his trackwas labelled violent and an inappropriate choice to be played at a Sydney primary school.
Bird says he’s been invited to many schools to share his story and speak about the context of his music. The song – which is told from the perspective of a Butchulla warrior watching Captain Cook roll into shore and was commissioned for an NITV documentary on the subject — is also regularly used as study text, he says, in both primary schools and high schools for students to better understand Australia’s history of colonisation.
An education department spokesperson told this masthead at the time that the school’s leadership has been “counselled about making appropriate choices” in the future. When the rapper shared a statement about the controversy on his Instagram, a number of teachers replied with supportive comments.
