High School does not contain the original photo or names of the students who are part of the Jewish Student Union club, said East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen. Instead, a photo of students wearing hijabs was printed on the page next to the name Jewish Student Union in a section of the yearbook listing school clubs.
Cohen also questioned whether the incident rises to the level of a hate crime and how the perpetrator will be punished.“At a minimum, I have also been assured that new yearbooks will be ordered and distributed with the correct pictures and names,” Cohen said. “Hate has no place in East Brunswick and Anti-Semitism will not be tolerated.”
“We deeply apologize for this error and the disappointment it has caused,” he said. “Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work expeditiously to rectify this situation.” “We are seeking clarification from the school and Board of Education on how such an incident occurred, as well as the actions planned to address this unacceptable situation and to hold the people who are responsible accountable,” the group said.
