Higher education minister Naledi Pandor says 70% of undergraduates obtained their degree after seven years of studying.Higher education and training minister Naledi Pandor has asked whether students are ready for university studies immediately after matric. This follows the release of a report which showed that 70% of undergraduates obtained their degree after seven years of studying. This finding is contained on the Post School Education and Training Monitor, which provides an overview of macro trends in the higher education system."Focusing on the cohort that enrolled at contact universities for the first time in 2007, by the seventh year after the initial enrolment 70% of entrants had graduated.

“With respect to distance students, only 19% of the 2007 cohort had graduated by the seventh year following first enrolment,” the report said.

The basic Education system needs to be re looked at. The learners are taught to forget because the teachers are using the same method of educating this learners year in and out even if it doesn't produce results. There's no strategy and the monitoring of that strategy in place.

No,they’re not. It is only when you are in varsity that you actually see the gap between basic education and tertiary education that requires critical thinking and application that is not taught and encouraged in high school. The pass mark in high school is 30% lower

We should introduce a new framework. Call it Post Basic Education Assessment (PBEA). Learners must write an assessment to evaluate their competency for academic or otherwise career aspiration. Marked by University Professors.

Perhaps we need to have prospective students or graduates serve their country after their tertiary education. Perhaps As Police Officers, Traffic Cops or Even Military. This would be for a fixed period of time.

How long did u take to get to PHD?

Because they’re trying to be Julius Malema during their academic years.

I know people who graduated record time with average marks ..I know people who graduated after 7 years cum laude.... Point?🤷🏽‍♀️

With me, it wasn’t if I was ready or not, I think most people are, but I didn’t know what my life plan was, I think we need to do better career education...

Majority of kids after grade 12 are not ready for tertiary education. I made it on record time because I had a two year break after grade 12. I worked in for two yrs in shops and restaurants. By the time I went to tertiary I had made up my mind that I wanted to be successful 💯

Or more if you ask me

This lady Just becoz she was graduating now she's busy opening her mouth Course is chowing

Are most of them from township and rural schools?

They used to be, but education deteriorated to a sub-standard level

It’s because There’s a big gap between SA basic education and varsity standards. We can solve this by nationalizing a pass mark to be 50% throughout the basic education. The curriculum needs to be looked at as well.

Nobody will be ready with poor anc education

Beneth_Ndlovu It takes longer cause kids study on empty stomachs with no proper sleeping facilities. Many just don't enjoy their education due to their poor backgrounds. Unlike studying while driven around in blue lights.

No we not ready I mean u 67 years and is only now u obtain your PhD, and of course others obtain it when they are between 30 and 40🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️, not all of us have equal opportunities.

Do we still have a 3 year degree?

Because they party and drink too much. Send in under cover reporters and you will see.

Isn’t this her Fault?

And regrettably many of these students who took seven years to complete a 3 years degree still cannot do the job.

OMW..

They must factor in financial exclusion when some students can't register and have to go hustle for a year or 2 saving up to go back and finish

This partly points to the failure of basic education to prepare students for tertiary

Some are and some are not.

I am more interested in the stats from 15 years ago to see if this has always been a trend, or if it is a new development. Most of those I matriculated with obtained their degrees within the allotted time.

Thanks God I'm not 1 of those

I can relate 🤣

I think not all of them are, I have always have a thought about the readiness of Fikile Mbalula on going to Tertiary to at least get a Diploma if not a Degree but I realise it's not easy to be readily prepared

30%ers 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

No

Basic education system must be fixed

Or because majority of SA students can't even afford nik nacks.

Not with ir 35% pass rate, u want to breed illiterate people whom will keep voting for free T-shirts, corrupt leaders n R400 Mxcm

I wonder how many years did it take ma'am

Uthetha nam ngoku

High schools don't prepare students for the psychological abuse, the racism and every man for himself attitude they encounter when they get to varsity...

They can't be ready if they still pass matric by thirty percent

I bet 90 % of them are black

Can we have the demographics? Which race groups take the longest? And which group mostly completes the degree within the prescribed time?

There are ready. You just need to decolonilise tertiary education. Let student use language of their choice. That's how Afrikaans students got degrees in record time.

Khanime ngochuku 😭

All provinces are competing to be number 1 they teach previous question papers less content especially the favourite province.

She must tell us. She's the minister.

I mean. They should be. If they aren’t, the education system has failed them. Say what you want about Apartheid, the system equipped white people who finished school to finish their degrees. That goal should be replicated but for everyone.

Struuuuu

This is fake news

Schools shld prep children fpr uni. In uni the pass mrk is 50%, anything less than tht is a fail. Schools shld move away frm the 30% pass mark & implement a pass mark of 50%. Wen a child goes 2 university they wud already b used 2 the 50% pass mark. Dis is 1 of the ways 2 improve

Obviously they are not. There has been talk of revisiting the curriculum and the conduct of teachers and pupils alike. But it seems that this will be a hard nut to crack.

M one of them

If pass rate 30 what do you think?

This is where 30% enter.

Shocking waist of resources. Why does all have to have degrees. We need a strong technical manufacturing workforce.

And then what

Like me, seven is the number of God. We are blessed.

They can take as long as they want if they’re funding it themselves. However if someone else (NSFAS / Corporate) putting up the money then it’s one chance only. So sick of money being wasted on lazy f***ers milking the system. There r more deserving people for that money to go to

Which means government subsidises them 4 years too long. Funds that shoukd go to other students keeping to the time frame.

No surprise here.....result of 30% maybe

Says a lot for the education as well as a more important fact, THESE LAZY SHITHEADS ARE COSTING TAXPAYERS MONEY. MAKE THEM PAY AND IF THEY PASS, THEY GET REIMBURSED. FAIL AND IT COSTS THEM, NOT US. SIMPLE SYSTEM. NO CONNING TAXPAYERS.

Surely the question should be directed DBE_SA 🤷🏾‍♂️

I was not ready myself

Degrees vary,so please sit down minister. Before we give you an equation to solve.

The are taking longer like you in public office. why you don't retire so those who pass on time can get jobs. Don't bore us.
